How to Estimate Words Using Our Calculator

Using the Characters to Words Converter

To estimate the number of words in a text, simply enter the number of characters in the box labeled "Enter Number" below the Characters box. Our characters to words converter will automatically update and give you a range of two numbers: a low estimate and a high estimate of words.

Need to Convert Characters to Pages?

If you want to know how many pages your text will be, we also have a characters to pages converter on the far right. This calculator will give you an estimated range of the number of pages. Keep in mind that it calculates pages based on text typed with a double spaced Times New Roman 12 point font.

Need to know how many minutes will readers take reading your written work?

This calculator also includes a word to minute read conversion. This is divided into three (3) parts namely slow, average and fast readers. Slow readers are given a 100 words per minute average. Average readers are given a 130 words per minute whille fast readers are given a 160 words per minute average. By using our calculator, the highest word count provided is then divided to the word per minute average hence the three classified word per minute result.

How Many Characters are in a Word?

On average, a word contains between 5 and 6.5 characters, including spaces and punctuation. For example, The Great Gatsby has an average of 5.44 characters per word, while Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone has an average of 5.55 characters per word. A typical New York Times article has an average of 6.05 characters per word.

Estimating Words Without Spaces

The estimate our calculator provides includes spaces. If you want an estimate without spaces, simply subtract 1 from the estimation. For example, instead of an average range of 5 to 6.5 characters per word, the range without spaces would be 4 to 5.5 characters per word. To get a lower range, divide the total characters by 4. To get an upper range, divide the total characters by 5.5.

How the Estimate is Calculated

Our estimator tool divides your number of characters by 6.5 to get the first number in the range and divides your number of characters by 5 to get the ending number in the range. For example, if you type in 1000 characters, you will get an estimated range of 154 to 200 words. The first number (154 words) is achieved by dividing 1000 by 6.5, and the last number (200 words) is achieved by dividing 1000 by 5.

Improving Readability

Readability refers to how easy it is for an average person to read a text. One factor that affects readability is word length. In general, shorter words are easier to read and understand compared to longer words.

It can be difficult to visualize the length of a text just by looking at the character count. That's why it's important to convert it to a word count or page count to get a better idea of its length. If you ever need to know how many characters are in a certain number of words, our characters to words calculator is here to help.

Hope this helps you readers for future use.
